Our People

Jason A. Smith, MSFP, CFP®

The Big Picture

What do fishery science, river engineering and financial planning have in common? Surprisingly, quite a bit. They are all professions requiring strong analytical and complex problem-solving skills! While not the typical path, it is what makes Jason’s multifaceted background as a natural resource consultant and financial planner a powerful point of distinction he brings to Hausman Advisors. A life-long learner and educator alike, Jason is passionate about helping people discover and act on what is most important to them about their wealth and their lives. His experiences and personality enable Jason to view wealth management with the evidence-based eye of an engineer, with an extensive background in asking, “Why is this so?” and “How can we make it better?”

At Hausman Advisors

Jason is managing principal and financial planner who serves our clients as their Personal Wealth Engineer. Together, he and Karen help clients create and follow their personalized financial life plan, supported by our evidence-based investment strategy.

Prior Experience

For a decade prior to becoming a financial professional, Jason was a fishery scientist and natural resources consultant, working for a globally recognized river engineering firm based in Hood River. After transitioning to financial planning in 2005, Jason became a financial advisor as a registered representative for a regional broker/dealer. He merged businesses with Robert Hausman in 2008 when he formed Hausman Advisors and assumed management of the combined firm.

Jason holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation and is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). He received a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning (MSFP) from Kansas State University, a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Idaho, a Graduate Certificate in Financial Therapy from Kansas State University, and an Executive Certificate in Financial Planning from the Pamplin School of Business, University of Portland.

The Hausman-Smith Household

When Karen and Jason aren’t working, they spend time with their two children enjoying the many outdoor activities that the Columbia River Gorge offers. Both Jason (a fifth-generation Oregonian) and Karen grew up in the Portland Metro area. They relocated to Hood River in 2001, falling in immediate love with the vibrant culture, people and activities that characterize the region. It remains a perfect choice for their family, as they can enjoy their small town while remaining close to Portland and nearby family.
